The Journey bills itself as a touring board that’s built for speed. This isn’t an easy task to achieve since touring boards are usually built to be used for up to days at a time while faster boards are usually designed to be used for a maximum of a few hours. The way they tried to accomplish this was by finding a common ground of overall real estate on the board while cutting down on weight. The biggest way can be seen is by its acceptable — but not optimal — 4-inch thickness.

This is what you’d consider an entry-level board for the price and quality of the materials used. That said, it uses a high grade of PVC and for its Korean drop-stitch construction that gets surprising stiff although just being rated for 15 PSI. As long as you stay at or well-below the weight limit, the 4-inch board shouldn’t have any issues with bending.

There is one large detachable fin on the bottom compared to three. As a rule, the more fins you have, the better the board tracks. However, they also create drag, which is why by having one fin, Vilano is saying that they wanted to create a faster board.

The deck is probably where this board shines. It has an attractive design that includes a diamond-shaped anti-slip pad that covered a good 60% of the surface. The deck also has a central carry hand which often is missing in budget iSUPs. In addition, it sports a bungee area towards the nose as well an impressive 10 D-rings along the boards for holding down gear in addition to the one in the back for an ankle leash. However, considering the 200-pound weight limit, you probably won’t be able to take that much with you unless the rider is relatively small. To be fair, two of the D-rings are meant to be used with a shoulder strap that comes in handy when you’re moving around an inflated board. Regardless, these are thoughtful features and give you options.

In the box you’ll find a three-piece aluminum paddle that can be adjusted to measure between 65.5” and 86” depending on the height of the paddler and the type of water where they find themselves. The other two items you’ll find in the box are a standard hand pump, backpack and should strap. All three of these make traveling with your SUP to be as easy and convenient as possible. One item that was notably missing was a repair kit. While you can purchase any of the items separately, this is an item that comes standard with most boards.

Overall, if you’re looking for a budget-friendly touring board for a smaller paddler, there’s no reason to not consider the Vilano Journey 10’ SUP board. As long as you’re on reasonably smooth water with occasional movement, this guy will get you a fun day with the family!
