ERS: Leading by Example

Earth River SUP blossomed in 2012 when a group of paddle board enthusiasts grew tired of searching for portable high-performance gear that could take on a variety of conditions, so they decided to create their own. The company’s early days were spent manufacturing boards exclusively for paddle boarding schools. Skip to now and Earth River Sup is a paddle board company that is changing the way the watersports industry conducts business. ERS is known for their innovative boards ‘designed by a paddler’ with enhanced features made from only the best materials, manufactured in partnership with reliable companies who have high ethical standards. Earth River SUP boards are premium, reliable iSUPs that were designed to be used by any rider, anywhere. ERS doesn’t follow a hierarchical structure though, they broke the mold with their community-based business model, striving only to make a better product and constantly improve the existing ones, without compromise. The backbone of Earth River SUP has and always will be; quality, value and integrity.

The Board in General

For the perfect balance of function and form from an all-around iSUP you want to look for a board between 9 and 11 feet, with a width between 31 and 34 inches. The Skylake Green series was designed to fulfill the needs of every sized rider in that range and offers a variety of boards for different functions and skill levels. The 9’6” measures at 31” wide and provides plenty of stability for smaller riders and works as a compact performer for experienced riders. The 10’6” model is 32” wide, which doesn’t sound like much but that one inch makes a significant difference. This model is great for those riders seeking just a little bit of everything from their iSUP. Finally, the 11’0” may seem a bit bulky when you set it up, but once you’re on the water you forget it’s inflatable. The 34” width perfectly complements the length of this board carrying stability from the nose to the tail, for big beginners or those who just want a reliable platform for bringing the kids along or trying SUP yoga. All of the Skylake Green models from ERS have some of the highest weight capacities we have seen in a lightweight inflatable. Each board features a tri-fin thruster setup with unbreakable fixed fins. These durable fins hold their shape on the water, yet are pliable enough to roll up with your board. If for any reason the memory plastic fins become misshapen, lie the board in the sun for about ten minutes and reshape your fins. You’re always ready to hit the water with the Skylake Green.

The Board: Deeper Details

ERS does a great job at offering a wide range of options for literally every rider, not only do their board designs vary but they offer multiple construction technologies for different levels of performance. The Skylake Green series all have the same durable lightweight construction and functional features. A drop stitch core is at the heart of every ERS board, two layers of woven fabric are then added and then finished off with double-ply PVC coating. This Fusion process produces a puncture-resistant durable board with reduced weight and increased stiffness. The top decks are a one-of-a-kind hybrid of crocodile and deep diamond cut EVA foam that is %40 thicker than most inflatable SUPs.  The standing zone is smooth under your feet but offers plenty of grip when things get wet. The kick pad is diamond cut and provides extra grip for turning and is raised for more control, there is also an arch support for added comfort on bare feet. At the nose of the board we see a 4-point bungee storage system attached with heavy-duty stainless-steel D-rings, use the bungee storage for securing a dry bag, a pair of shoes or a cooler full of beer. At the very tip of the nose and tail of the board are two additional D-rings for towing, tethering or using as a leash connect point. Our last and most favorite feature on ERS SUPs is the removable neoprene carrying handle. Located in the center of the board, this handle tends to get in the way when you want to lie down or do yoga, but a removable handle eliminates all of those worries. Although, the handle on ERS boards is so soft you won’t need to remove it, it’s nice to know you can.

Enhanced Extras

Since ERS puts so much time and effort into the fine details of their boards they don’t worry too much about bulking up their accessory packs. While they may not include a lot of extras with your board, know that what you do get is of the highest quality. You will be so happy with the quality and performance of these boards you won’t mind dishing out a few extra bucks to buy a paddle yourself. Included with the Skylake Green series is the ERS premium travel backpack and dual action pump.  The backpack is roomy enough for your board plus all of the necessary gear and is made from heavy duty premium materials down to the zipper. Grooved wheels, padded straps and handles as well as an ID window make this a comfortable and convenient travel backpack for you and your iSUP. The pump is lightweight and easy to use and features a built-in pressure gauge, but if you don’t feel like taking the extra ten minutes to manually inflate your board, you can purchase an electric pump from ERS.

Board Performance

A company that started out making boards specifically for training has most likely seen every type of rider imaginable. Their boards have also definitely taken more than a beating or two, so ERS certainly has done some research and with plenty of data, crafted a seriously awesome board. Each of the Skylake Green series models shines in its own way, these boards can really do it all. The lightweight construction makes them highly portable boards. Whether you’ve got it strapped down in the backpack or you’re holding it over your head, these boards are just ridiculously easy to transport. The compact 9’6” is the easiest go-to board for travelling and spontaneous adventures, the 10’7” performs the best on every water condition and the 11’0” provides a firm and stable base for any SUP activity. The thruster fin setup on these boards allow them to excel in shallow waters and give the board plenty of forward speed not usually seen in all-around boards. The thicker deck pads make a world of a difference on your feet and especially knees plus the deeper grooves allow water to wick away faster.

Let’s Clarify: The Not so Negatives

Since nothing in life is perfect there was bound to be something that ERS missed, right? Well, sort of, you see the only complaint here is the lack of included accessories, but because their boards and gear are so well made and long lasting, we’re not really concerned about not receiving a paddle with our purchase. When you own an ERS board you’re willing to dish out a few extra bucks for some accessories, and let’s face it if you got the board, you can probably afford the accessories.
